Contains the following types of materials: photographs, photo albums. Covers the following time period: 1949-1955. Contains photographs of the following units: 2nd Constabulary Brigade; 1st Infantry Division. General description of the collection: The George W. Smythe photograph collection includes photos of only a segment of his career, from 1949-1955; during that period of time he commanded the 1st Infantry Division with headquarters at Grafenwohr, Germany; photo albums with photos of a review at Grafenwohr, as well as, photos of soldiers training. He assumed command of the 2nd Constabulary Brigade in Germany in 1951 and most of the photos in this collection are of his tenure with that unit. Subsequent service was with the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea followed by assignments to Army Headquarters, Washington, D.C. as Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff for Civilian Component Affairs and deputy commander of the Second Army in 1953. An album and several photos document this period especially dealing with Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. In May 1955 Smythe, as a Major General, was posted to Taikei, Formosa as Chief, Military Assistance Advisory Group where he was personal advisor to Chiang Kai-Shek. General Smythe retired from active duty in 1957.
